Used Ford diesel engines have been around for years. They are known in some circles as the best and most dependable truck diesel motors on the market. The Ford diesel truck dates back to the 1980’s with the 6.9 liter diesel motor. It used a mechanical injector pump and was non-turbo. Ford had issues with not enough power and went to the 7.3 liter engine. This design produced more torque and also improved performance.
In 1993-1994 Ford began to offer several different diesel motors for their trucks. The 7.3 non turbo direct injected engine, the 7.3 non-turbo in-direct injection and for the first time a 7.3 turbocharged diesel motor was introduced. The turbo version by far the best engine Ford had offered because the turbo added power without a big expense and had no negative effect on durability.
In 1995 the Ford Powerstroke 7.3 Turbocharged Diesel engine was introduced, this engine was a great success. The non-turbo design engines were dropped from production at this point. Fuel economy was better and performance improved even more. This design of the Powerstroke was offered until 1997.
The 7.3 Powerstroke was extremely popular and Ford used the International built 7.3 engines until 2003. Ford sold millions of these engines as it became the most popular and reliable diesel on the market. The Chevy diesel engine was plagued with problems and the Dodge diesel was a 6 cylinder Cummins and was behind the curve compared the big 7.3 V8 Ford was rolling out. Starting in 2003 Ford had to introduce the 6.0 liter diesel engine because the 7.3 would not meet emission standards. This was a big setback for Ford because the 6.0 liter diesel had too much compression and would blow head gaskets. Also, the EGR valve was water cooled, the problem was the valve would rust creating a hole, then engine would suck water into the cylinders and it would destroy the motor. The engine was re-designed in 2006 and it was only used thru 2007.
The 6.4 Turbocharged diesel engine was introduced in 2008 and was a total re-design from it’s earlier predecessors. Even with strict emission laws this diesel motor produced 350 hp and 650 lb-ft. A big part of this kind of performance while meeting stricter regulations was the new dual sequential turbo system. This engine uses 2 smaller turbo that engage a different times which reduces lag and increases power.
The latest addition to the Ford diesel engine family is the 6.7 liter motor. This engine went back to the single turbo design, Ford nicknamed it the “Scorpion” because of the location of the turbo. The motor produces 400 hp and 750 lb-ft of torque which is by far the most powerful diesel engine used by Ford to date.
