Jaguar built the XJ8 as a flagship car. It competes with the BMW 7 series and the Mercedes S class automobiles. To be in the market, the XJ8 needed a powerful engine to keep it in the running with these other vehicles. Jaguar offered 2 different engines to give the buyer an entry point into the vehicle and a top end of the class option for the performance minded person. The first V8 was a non-supercharged 4.0 liter V8 engine. This engine produced 300 horsepower offering solid performance, good fuel economy for the class and all that goes along with owning a car with a V8 engine.

The XJ8 Vanden Plas had an optional 4.0 liter supercharged engine. This engine offered 400 horsepower and was a big increase over the non-supercharged engine. A 400 horsepower engine really steps up performance and gives the drive plenty of power to really enjoy driving the open road in an aggressive manner. The 4.0 liter is an all aluminum built engine so weight distribution is better and also the handling of the car is greatly enhanced.
