The Hummer H3 came to market with a 3.5 liter inline 5 cylinder engine. If I am not mistaken, this is the first time GM used a 5 cylinder engine in the US market. This engine was a durable engine that pleased most people who purchased the H3. It was a low maintenance engine, the spark plugs were good for 100,000 miles which helped hold down operating costs. The 3.5 engine was replaced with a redesigned 3.7 liter engine. This model increased horsepower and torque helping to propel the H# down the road a little better and also aided in off road situations. The H3 was built on a very sturdy chassis and the styling was taken from its bigger brother the Hummer H2.
The big dog Hummer H3 was the Alpha model. This SUV was offered with a 5.3 liter V8 engine. GM used the this engine to appeal to the performance off roading crowd. It was a great combination because the H3 was almost a compact vehicle but enjoyed the power and performance of a V8 engine. Fuel economy dropped to about 13 miles to the gallon but when you are buying a Hummer, fuel economy is at the bottom of your list. The V8 version was excellent at climbing hills and could pull a heavy trailer with no effort at all. This 5.3. liter engine was used in the full side Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks
The list of engines used in the Hummer H3 is short :
