The GMC 3500 Sierra uses the most powerful engines GMC offers for it’s passenger grade vehicle. This 1 ton truck is very capable and has the drivetrain to prove it. The most widely used engine in the Sierra 3500 is the Duramax diesel engine. The latest 2015 model engine combines technology not only in the design and build of the engine but also the electronic components and software that bring everything together.

Some of the earlier built Sierra 3500 trucks used a 6.0 liter engine. This was a good engine but the big brother that replaced the long running 454 ci big block was the 8.1 liter engine. This engine delivered big on torque and reliability. The downside is horrible gas milage. The 6.6 Duramax has better economy and more torque than the 8.1 engine. This is 1 of the advantages of using a diesel engine over a gasoline model. The other is some people just want a diesel. The diesel engine has a long history of being used as a workhorse engine and having a long life span.
