GM built the Buick Somerset for the economy market. That is reflected in the 2 different engines that were offered for this model. The most popular and troublesome engine was the 2.5 liter transverse 4 cylinder engine.
The biggest issue for the 2.5 liter Somerset engine was blowing the head gasket. The head would have to be removed, surface and the gasket replaced. The V6 2.8 liter engine was a welcome improvement offering better performance and reliability. The earlier 2.8 liter engine was throttle body injected but GM some upgraded to a multipoint injection system. This helped with power, fuel economy and overall reliability.
