In 1985, BMW introduced the first M5 with an inline six cylinder engine. The version sold in the United States developed 286 horsepower and 251 lb-ft. of torque. It used Bosch Motronic fuel injection. In 1989, BMW increased the displacement of the M5 engine to 3.6 liters and the horsepower rose to 311 and torque to266 lb-ft. BMW installed 24 valves, electronically controlled butterfly valves in the intake system of the new engine.
In 1998, BMW upgraded the M5 to a V8 with 32 valves, an 11.0: 1 compression ratio, multiport fuel injection producing 394 horsepower and 370 lb-ft. of torque. Multiport fuel injection injects the fuel/air mixture into the intake system just before each cylinder’s intake valve. Most fuel injection systems spray the fuel into the intake manifold at just one place. With the V8 engine, the M5 could go from zero to 62 mph in 4.8 seconds.
BMW outdid the 1998 V8 with a 5.0 liter V10 in 2005. This engine carried a 8250 rpm redline and developed 500 horsepower and 380 lb-ft. of torque. BMW started with a clean sheet of paper with the design of the engine and came up with a product that produced 100 more horsepower than the previous V8 while weighing just 2.2 pounds heavier.
The M5 is considered by many publications to be the most desirable BMW ever made. In 2004, an M5 went around the Nurburgring race track in a time of eight minutes and 13 seconds, a time that beat the Porsche Boxster S, the Mercedes Benz C55 AMG and the Audi S5. The Top Gear television program had an M5 with the V8 engine go around their private race track, driven by a profession race driver, in 1:27.0. That time beat a Lotus Elise, a Mercedes-Benz CL65 AMG and an Audi S4 Quattro.
M5 engines are exciting and impressive. Find one through an engine broker who will search dealers though out the United States and choose one with a reliable record. Make sure the shop is familiar with the M5 before allowing them to work on it. The is a specific car with a specific engine. It is best to deal with an ASE certified shop.
