Manufactured by Hyundai Motor Corporation, the Veracruz product line fell into the mid-sized crossover sport utility vehicle category. Initial production began in 2006 but carried the 2007 model year label. The Veracruz, or ix55 as it was known in Europe, ceased production in 2011. The entire production run of the Hyundai Veracruz occurred in Ulsan, Korea.
With only four years of production, the Hyundai Veracruz offered a very limited selection of engines based on where the vehicle was sold. The vehicle featured a transverse forward mounted engine which powered either a front-wheel or four-wheel drive configuration. The vehicle was only available in a four-door design with a hatchback.
The Veracruz was only available in North and South America with a standard 3.8-liter V-6 gasoline engine. The engine developed about 263 horsepower and was often couple with a six-speed automatic transmission.
The gasoline engine boasted an average fuel economy of 17 miles per gallon in the two-wheel drive version and 16 mpg in the four-wheel drive configuration.
In Europe, The Hyundai Veracruz was only available with a 3.0-liter V-6 diesel engine. This engine featured a variable-geometry turbocharger and boasted about 240 horsepower. The variable-geometry turbocharger changes the size of the turbo chamber as engine speeds change. This allows the turbocharged engine to operate a peak efficiency at all speeds.
The Hyundai Veracruz replaced the Hyundai Terracan as the company’s mid-sized SUV. The Terracan design was based on a truck configuration and was larger and offered a higher ground clearance. The Veracruz, based on car designs, offered a more streamlined appearance and lower ground clearances and was similar to the company’s compact crossover SUV marketed as the Tucson.
Production of the Hyundai Veracruz ended in late 2011 with a limited number of the vehicles labeled as model year 2012. There were no design changes between the Veracruz models labeled 2011 and 2012. Hyundai offers its seven-passenger Santa Fe model to its buyers looking for a larger crossover SUV model.
The Hyundai Veracruz was awarded a five-star rating from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and also picked up honors from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for crash safety.
