The CR-Z is the answer to a sporty hybrid. It is only available in a coupe and is a 2+2 seating car that comes standard with a manual transmission. This car is thought to a successor to the early CRX because of the name and design. The CRZ is rated as an AT-PZEV (Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle) as rated by the California Air Resource Board. The CRZ 0-60 time is about 10.5 seconds in the 1/4 mile. This car stands out as the only hybrid that has a manual transmission as an option.

The motor in the CR-Z is not so simple to discuss anymore. The engines for this vehicle are known as the Honda Hybrid System because it combines gasoline and electricity to get the car down the road. The gasoline part of the Honda Hybrid System is a fuel efficient 1.5 liter SOHC 16-valveni-VTEC (CVT) that produces 111 hp at 6000rpm. The electric part of the engine is a DC brushless motor that produces only 14 hp at 1500rpm. The transmission options are a CVT (contentiously variable transmission) which is a shiftless automatic transmission. The other option which is an industry first is a 6-speed manual transmission. A related type vehicle would be the Insight which is also a hybrid vehicle or the Fit Hybrid.

The performance result is a sporty hybrid for sure. The Honda Hybrid System for this CR-Z delivers a total of 122 bhp at 6000 rpm and 128 lb-ft torque. Early road tests were impressive of the Japanese market CR-Z. The 0-60 mph test came in at 10.5 seconds and the ¼ mile was 17.6 seconds which is not to shabby for an economy hybrid car. However Motor Trend tested 0-60 and clocked it at 8.3 seconds and Inline Performance clocked the same test at 8.8 seconds.

Fuel economy for the CR-Z is 31 miles per gallon in the city and 37 miles per gallon on the highway. Road and Track stated the handling is good for a front wheel drive vehicle but this is not a full on sports car.
