The GMC 2500 Truck is a real workhorse. The engines offered vary from gasoline V8 engines to a high torque diesel model. The GMC 2500 early model trucks used a carburetor Chevy 350 V8 engine. An optional engine was the big block Chevy 454 V8 motor. The 454 engine was built to deliver good low end torque helping the truck to carry a larger payload and increase the towing capacity.
Some of the later GMC 2500 trucks came with a 5.3 liter engine, the larger 5.0 liter V6 or the really heavy duty 8.1 liter engine. The Duramax diesel engine set the pace for torque and over all power. The newest version of the Duramax is turbocharged getting great mileage and better performance than the older designed engines. The GMC 2500 goes head to head with the Ford F250 and does a great job of standing on its own two feet. For years Ford has dominated the heavy duty truck market but GM is back in the battle.
