Popularly known as Econoline or Club Wagon, Ford Passenger was launched by the Ford Motor Company in 1961-2011. Based on Ford Falcon, this compact van gave tough competition to Chevy Corvair 95 and Volkswagen Type 2. In the earliest Ford Passenger vans, 144 CID 6-cylinder engine was used, which was fitted between the front seats. With the passage of time, 144 CID engine lost its sheen and it was replaced by 170 CID and 240 CID engines. In consequence of the immense success of Econoline, in 1964, its design was adopted by Chevy Van and Dodge A100.
The second generation (1969-1974) of Ford Passenger completely revolutionized the van-design by moving the engine to the front end of the vehicle. The engines used in this generation of Econoline were 240 CIC (3.9-liter) I6, 300 CID (4.9-liter) I6 and 302 CID (4.9-liter) Windsor V8. In addition to Ford Passenger, 302 CID (4.9-liter) Windsor V8 was used in Mustang GT, Mercury Monarch, Ford Galaxie and Ford Granada. Owing to its popularity, this engine can be readily found in auto shops for resale.
In the initial stages of the third generation (1975-1991) of Ford Econoline, 300 CID I6 and 302 CID (4.9-liter) Windsor V8 motors were used. Later, they were replaced by more powerful 351 CID Windsor V8, 460 CID 385 V8, 6.9-liter Navistar diesel V8 and 7.3-liter Navistar diesel V8 engines.
The fourth generation (1992-Present) of Ford Passenger saw some of the biggest changes in the engine lineup. Between 1992 and 1996, Econoline came packed with 4.9-liter inline 6, 5.0-liter Windsor V8, 5.8-liter Windsor V8, 7.5-liter V8 or 7.3-liter diesel V8 engines. In the year 1997, all the engines except 7.3-liter diesel V8 were replaced by better options. For instance, 4.2-liter Essex V6 was swapped with 300 inline 6. Likewise, 6.8-liter Triton V10 used in place of 7.5-liter/460 V8. 4.6-liter V8 and 5.4-liter V8 replaced 302 CID Windsor V8 and 351 CID Windsor V8 respectively.
7.3-liter Power Stroke diesel motor finally gave way to 6.0-liter Power Stroke, in the year 2004. The latter was more powerful than the former primarily because of the presence of intercooler. Due to the replacement, used 7.3-liter diesel engines can be easily found in several auto shops. In 2008 and 2009 models of Ford Passenger, 6.0-liter turbo diesel and 6.0-liter twin turbo diesel engines were used. At the end of 2010 model year, 6.0-liter turbo diesel motor was discontinued.
The 2011 model of Ford Passenger comes with 5.4-liter V8 engine that efficiently produce 225 horsepower. Its competitors GMC Savana and Chevy Express are still stuck up with 4.3-liter 195hp V6 engine. By 2013, the Ford Motor Company intends to replace Passenger with a global version of Transit, which has been running successfully in Europe since 1965.
