The last generation of the Dodge Intrepid was released in 2004. This sedan has a 2.7L V6 engine. The engine is found in the front of the vehicle and has a double overhead cam. The V6 engine is one of the standard types of engines, with the four-cylinder engine being the alternative. The V6 engine has a reputation for offering more power than the four-cylinder. It is also more compact and sits in the car in a V shape, as opposed to being a simple straight engine. The car that is built for a V6 engine is slightly more mechanically complex than those engines that are of the straight, or inline variety, but they are still used in smaller cars because they can be manufactured to be relatively light in weight.

The compression ratio of this 2004 model is at 9.7, which is on the lower side, compared to cars whose ratio is over 10.1. The lower compression ratio reduces the car’s overall thermal and fuel efficiency. More heat is lost with these engines during operation, and there is less mechanical energy extracted from the fuel when mixed with the air. This compression ratio also increases the temperature of the exhaust that is emitted from this vehicle. However, this lower compression ratio means that the vehicle can run better on lower octane fuels, and it is not as subject to engine knocking as cars with higher ratios and better fuel efficiency.

In this generation of Intrepid, the bore diameter, at 86mm, is larger than the stroke, at 78.5mm. This ratio places the engine in the oversquare design category. Oversquare engines are known for their increased power. The faster cars with these engines run, the better they tend to perform.

The Dodge Intrepid model design has been similar from generation to generation. The compression ratio has remained the same, and they have consistently been fitted with V6 engines. The models released from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s had slightly larger engines than the newer generations. From 1995 to 1997, the engine was 3.3L, while from 1998 to 2001 the engine size was scaled down slightly to 3.2L. Then in 2002, the engine was scaled down significantly, from 3.2L to 2.7L. This trend continued until the last model was released in 2004.
