The first is a 3.6 liter Pentastar V6 with 24 valves that produces 305 horsepower and 268 lb-ft. of torque. It has a dual-tuned intake manifold, advanced sequential multiport fuel injection, dual variable valve timing and electronic throttle control. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that the engine will deliver 18 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway with the optional eight speed automatic. In the Challenger Rallye Redline model with this engine, Dodge includes a rear axle with a 3.06 ratio instead of the 2.65 ratio standard in the Challenger SXT and SXT Plus.
The middle engine is the 5.7 liter Hemi V8 which delivers 370 horsepower and 395 lb-ft. of torque. Dodge built in variable valve timing, electronic throttle control, dual ignition and interactive decel fuel shut-off which shuts off the flow of fuel when the car is decelerating. This engine can run on regular unleaded gasoline. The EPA estimates the fuel consumption of this engine in the city at 16 mpg and 25 on the open road. Dodge put a rear axle in this model with a 3.73 ratio.
The big hauler, the engine with the thick neck and shoulders as wide as a railroad tie is the 6.4 liter Hemi V8 in the Challenger SRT8. This Hemi produces 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft. of torque. It powers from zero to 60 mph in the high-four second range and the quarter mile in under thirteen seconds. The Challenger with this engine is capable of going from a standing stop to 100 mph and back to a standing stop in less than 16 seconds. Dodge estimates that the top speed at 175 mph. It’s so powerful that Dodge offers a day- long training course in performance driving. Fuel economy with the big engine is enhanced by 25% through the use of Dodge’s Fuel Saver Technology active valve exhaust system. This technology switches from eight cylinders to four in low-demand highway situations. You can satisfy your conscience and have fun at the same time. The EPA gives this engine a rating of 14 mpg in town and 23 on the open road. Dodge lowered the rear axle ratio in the SRT8 to 3.92 for eye-fluttering performance.
