Although still in the Dodge family of vehicles, Dodge trucks are now strictly called RAM. The RAM 3500 models are heavy duty diesel trucks. The 2013 RAM 3500 series comes with a 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel engine. This quick moving truck has 350 horsepower. Heavy duty engine cooling fans allow it to play hard, tow a lot and move as fast as possible when doing it. Torque is exceptional. The Laramies, with their manual transmission, can get 610 lb-ft of torque. The automatics can get 800 lb-ft of torque.

The engine includes an integrated air intake, a higher fuel injection system and the unique variable geometry turbine. This works the fuel and air at a remarkable speed to achieve better power with less fuel. A NOx Absorber Catalyst system alleviates the need for maintaining diesel exhaust fluid.

How does this powerful engine stop? To make the brakes more powerful and less likely to wear out, RAM gives the brake pads a wide surface area and uses extra-large pistors and calipers. Still, these heavy duty trucks need special assistance, or they would wear out their brakes fast. Inside the engine, an integrated exhaust brake actually slows the truck before the anti-lock brakes are needed. Instead of releasing the gasses through the turbocharger, the inlet shuts and allows backpressure to build. This reduces the engine’s throttle quickly and aids the brakes in topping the load. This special brake system really helps when loaded with heavy payload, towing cargo and/or stopping on downhill grades.

Most models come with a six-speed automatic transmission. The Tow/Haul mode allows the driver to use a revised shift schedule. This programming reduces shift changes while providing more power. The Electronic Range Select lets the driver limit the highest gear settings and take over manual shifting as needed for the load and speed. The 3500 ST and SLT offer regular cabs with 8-foot beds. Cab choices for other models include crew and mega cab. Bed lengths include 6-foot, 6-foot-four, and 8-foot. The longest trucks have the mega cabs and the 8-foot beds. By the way, if you prefer a gasoline engine, you will have to go with a 2500 model. The 2500 series offer the power diesel or a HEMI 5.7 Liter V8 that delivers 383 horsepower.
