The Audi 100 was one of the German auto manufacturer’s longer-running models, with production spanning from 1968 to 1994. The C3 (1982-1991) and C4 (1991-1994) platform variants were the most well-known of the Audi 100 model series and perhaps the most common variants of which engines can be found at most auto dismantlers and engine brokers. Engines for models prior to 1982 are much rarer in U.S. junkyards due to their relative obscurity and low production numbers.
Starting in 1984, the 100 was introduced to the U.S. market as the 5000 and given a lineup consisting solely of five-cylinder engines in both turbocharged and naturally aspirated variants, ranging from 2.1 liters to 2.3 liters in displacement. These engines produced a power output ranging from 100 horsepower to 130 horsepower in naturally aspirated form. Turbocharged variants produced anywhere from 140 horsepower in the turbocharged 2.1-liter motor to 220 horsepower in the turbocharged 2.2-liter motor of 1991. All of Audi’s five-cylinder engines sold in the U.S. market featured fuel injection.
Audi also produced four-cylinder engines for the 100, but these engines were not made available in the U.S. after 1984. Sourcing a five-cylinder engine for the Audi 100 is also made difficult due to the steep decline of 100/5000 engines produced after 1987, thanks in large part to the 60 Minutes unintended acceleration scandal and the negative impact it had on Audi sales from that year onward. However, Audi also used its five-cylinder motors in a number of other models, making it more likely for dismantlers and engine brokers to find a compatible motor.
