The Acura TL is a mid-size sedan manufactured by Honda. It was introduced in 1995 as the Acura Vigor and was rebadged for the Japanese-market from 1996 to 2000 as the Honda Inspire and from 1996 to 2004 as the Honda Saber.
The Acura TL used 6 cylinder engines only, never a 4 cylinder. This was due to the size and weight of the car. The TL model UA1-UA2 was the first generation was made from 1996 to 1998 in Japan and came with these three engines. A 2.0 liter inline 5 cylinder engine G20A, 2.5 liter inline 5 cylinder engine G25A4, 3.2 liter V6 C32A6. Principal’s rivals for the Acura TL Sedan include the Cadillac CTS, BMW Six Series, Hyundai Genesis and the Lexus ES 350.
Second generation models, UA4-UA5 were made from 1999 to 2003 and came with the J series engines only. The different engines offered were the 2.5 liter J25A, the 3.2 liter J32A and the 3.2 liter J32A2 [for the Type S-models].
Acura stuck with the J engines through the third generation UA6-UA7 from 2004 to 2008, and put out these two engines, the 3.2 Liter J32A3 (258 hp) V6 and a 3.5 Liter J35A8 (286 hp) V6 motor. In 2007 the most notable revision is the return of the Type-S edition of the TL. The Acura TL Type-S received the Acura RL’s 3.5-liter V6 tuned to 286 horsepower (213 kW) with either a 5-speed automatic with F1 style paddle shifters or a 6-speed manual transmission.
The fourth generation UA8-UA9, made from 2009 and presently in production. The base TL is front-wheel drive and is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 that makes 280 hp (210 kW) .The new TL SH-AWD (“Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive”) replaces the previous TL Type-S and is powered by a 3.7-liter V6 that produces 305 hp (227 kW). The 3.7L engine also uses VTEC variable-lift timing on both the intake and exhaust valves (the base TL and previous models only applied VTEC to the intake valves).
