The Nissan Sentra was first brought to market in 1982. The Sentra 1.6 engine was a carburetor type, very fuel efficient but had issues with the distributor. In 1987 the Sentra had an optional 1.6-liter fuel injected engine. This helped with performance and economy. In 1989 the Sentra 1.6 motor was converted to a 12 valve timing chain type engine. This lasted only 2 years until the next redesign. Starting in 1991 the Sentra engines were totally redone. The 1.6-liter engine was now the economy version next to the 2.0-liter engine which was also used in the Infiniti G20.

In 1996 the Sentra engines were replaced with a different type of 1.6-liter motor that offered more horsepower that its earlier versions. The 2.0-liter engine was changed and a new type cylinder head was used to help with air flow. In the year 2000 the 1.6 engine was dropped and replaced with a 1.8-liter engine. As a push to get the performance type drivers, Nissan introduced the 2.56-liter QR25DE engine to its line. The only transmission available for this engine was a 4-speed automatic which was a disappointment.

The 6^th generation Sentra offered either a 2.0-liter engine or a 2.5 liter that had an increase in power. The Sentra was still following behind the Toyota Corolla in market share but Nissan was making good strides in improving its economy budget minded car. The latest Sentra has 3 different engines to choose from, the cheap 1.6 liter HR16DE, the middle tier 1.8 liter MRA8DE motor and the Brazil built 2.0 liter 4-cylinder engine. In 2014 the Sentra got a revised CVT transmission instead of the earlier version that was a terrible design and never should have come to market. The CVT transmission took years for the automakers to get right. The principle was good but getting a shiftless automatic transmission took years to get functioning the correct way and offer good reliability.
